I hear it all the time ” I want to be first in Google, how much will this cost me”? The question should be how much is it worth to you if your website is on the first page of Google?

You can’t make money unless you spend some money for advertising. We all know this, this is why the yellow pages are so thick. What if I told you it would cost half of what you earn from it? Your next question might be how much can I earn?

Well how much is one paying customer worth to y0u? It would depend on your product or service. Some businesses would see more profit per customer than others. An attorney might make many thousands from just one customer while someone selling costume jewelry would make a couple of dollars. Because of this the pricing is usually different according to the industry you’re in.

Another variable might be how many people are searching for your product or service using various keywords. Another would be what kind of competition there is and how strong they are.

Being first on Google is not the best way to look at marketing your website on Google and the other major search engines. You should be looking at how many targeted customers are you going to get by being on the first page. Targeted meaning, how many of those surfers are looking for exactly what you have. And then how many are looking to buy just what you’re offering. After all wouldn’t it be better to be on the first page for a keyword that brings in 5 good paying customers or for a keyword that brings in 100 lookers.

Yahoo and MSN Do PPC Together

It’s getting closer, the msn and yahoo merger. The now have regulatory clearance that will let them work together to make it easier for us to use both properties to get some added ad exposure. Now we don’t have to have 3 campaigns, well not now, but soon. they’re talking about the end of the year for a goal to get the deal finished. This is good for those of use using more than just Google to advertise. With these two properties combined that will give a huge second advertising source.

Are your linking efforts wasted?

Anyone promoting a site will at one point or another have to generate some links to their site. This is just a fact of doing business on the internet. But when you do you link building, are you making the most of it. What I mean is, you spend a lot of time finding other webmasters to get links from, you write articles and you might even be creating link wheels among other things.

Local Search Scams

It’s free to list your company in Google maps. That’s right it’s free! I’ve been called so many times from companies wanting to list me in Google maps, it’s beginning to almost be funny. That is if there weren’t so many small business owner getting scammed. These are not Las Vegas SEO companies trying to get your business, they are normally telemarketers trying to “scam” you. They all say pretty much the same things, you’ve probably heard it. The bottom line is that they want you to fork out a set up fee of $99. which is not so bad, everyone has to get paid for their time. But then they want to charge a fee of $100 and up per month for doing absolutely nothing. Oh you can play with categories and keywords in your title and all but in the long run it doesn’t work. No body really knows what Google is thinking when it comes to local search and they’re not letting on.

List your company in Google maps by signing up for a Google account. Once signed up go to the local business center and fill out your profile. You’ll probably have to confirm by phone or email that it’s really your business. Then fill out as much information as you can or want to, the more the better. Watch your stats, they’re free in local business center and you’re off to the races.

Meta Information

This in my opinion is one the most over used hyped up services in seo today. I believe the reason is because it’s not fully understood what meta tags really are. The reality of it is that they hold very little weight or importance in the big seo picture.

There are 3 types of Meta tags as far as search engine optimization is concerned:

Title tag:

The Title tag is not a Meta tag. However title tags play a vital role in your site’s rankings. It is these words or phrase that appear in the title of your page in the hyperlink listings on the search engine results. I include the most relevant and specific keywords or key phrases in the title tag that best describe the contents of the page. Without this tag the search engines and most important, your customers won’t know what your page is about.

Meta description tag

This gives a short and concise summary of the content of your web page. The description appears in the Ses just below the title tag. I ensure that the meta description tag is brief but includes some of your top keywords. The words used must inspire the visitor to check your site out

further. Each page must be customized so all your web pages will not have the same meta tag descriptions.

Meta keywords tag

Although not as relevant as the other tags mentioned above, the Meta keywords tag is still recognized by some Search engines (not Google) so it doesn’t hurt to includes this tag. I include a number of meta keywords for you that are relevant to the content of your web pages.

Site Map Creation

The creation of a site map page enables SE spiders better crawling of your site. It also helps visitors to quickly scan your whole site for relevant information. A link and a short description of that link is created for each page of your site. The site map page is then added to your main navigation menu. An xml sitemap submitted to Google webmaster tools and the other 2 majors help in getting your new pages indexed quicker.

Link Popularity Building

Link Popularity refers to the number of links pointing to your site, from other sites on the web. There are other terms used for Link Popularity, such as Link building, In Bound Links, Back Links, etc The Search Engines consider your site important and rank it higher if other sites link to your site. There are two types of links you can establish on the web. One type is to trade links (Link Exchange), where you give a link from the links Page on your site to the partner sites. The second method is to establish only “incoming links” also called ‘one-way links’ or ‘non-reciprocal links”. With non-reciprocal links, you do not need to link back to them.

There are several ways of developing Inbound links.

Some of the techniques I follow in one way link building are:

a) Submitting to Free Directories

b) Writing articles and submitting to various sites for publishing to increase the link popularity of your site.

d) Article Marketing

SEO is not the end all beat all, there are tons of places to advertise online that can and will bring in paying customers. It all depends on how much time and work you want to pay for. Internet advertising is an ongoing affair. You should not think that once you get a first page ranking that it’s over and you’re finished. On the contrary, once you get a first page ranking for one keyword you should begin on the second while testing the first for results.

A good seo campaign should never be over, it should only get better with time, producing even more opportunity and income to get even better.
