When I am asked what I do for a living I say I do SEO. The most common response is along with a thoughtful expression, what is that?  I try to give the most encompassing answer I can within as short a time as I can. The problem is that there is no short way to tell the story.

Search engine optimization the technical term anyway is about what you have to do in order for your website to rank highly in the search engines.  This term however is over used by those fly by nighters ready to take you money and not really helping you with your real goal, that is paying customers to your site.

Let me ask you this question. Would you purchase billboard advertising in your town and have the billboard installed in the middle of the desert  where you have a few animals and a stray hiker walking by every so often?  I ask this because this is what your doing if you don’t know how people will find you. This is the biggest problem business owners are having with the so called search engine optimization companies, especially the new start ups.

In the next post I’ll be focusing on how to find out which keywords people are using to find a service or product like yours.
